64Bit Power for Color Adjustment
Color. The eye is naturally attracted to color, bright reds, vivid greens. Stories have been written about color. Songs have even been sung about color.

Color control is vital to making a subject pop. Nik Software in Viveza 2.0 enhances their powerful color control solution with three new features.

Global Image Adjustments
Of the three enhancements, global image adjustments will be used the most. Now apply any color, light, or structure enhancement image-wide. Then refine the global adjustment selectively using control points. The included levels & curves provide even more control over contrast and tonality.

Structure Adjustment
Control the level of detail in your images for the ultimate look from realistic to artistic.

Shadow Adjustments
Preserve and recover details hidden in shadows. Yet another tool to control the look and feel of the image.

Training
NIk Software provides both live and video training. Check out their web site for the current schedule. Downloading the demo and using the training resources is a great way to test drive the product.

How many apps are there for the Apple iPad (1-, 2-, 300,000?) How many apps allow established and new publishers the ability to publish content on various mobile devices? Far less. Adobe is launching the Adobe Digital Publishing Suite using Adobe InDesign CS5. If publishers are interested in creating, publishing, and selling digital content directly to consumers through leading mobile marketplaces, or directly from a publisher’s website, then consider Adobe’s Digital Publishing Suite.

With Adobe InDesign CS5 and incorporating PDF and HTML5, users can apply familiar publishing tools as they upload content, and test their interactivity while organizing and packaging content. Currently in Beta, Adobe Digital Publishing Suite will allow established commercial publishers (and entrepreneur publishers) the ability to publish across various digital phones, and e-readers (running iOS or Adobe AIR®). Downloading the Adobe InDesign CS5 plug-ins takes patience, and there is a learning curve to apply the publishing tools, however, the opportunities are limitless with the increasing demand for digital media.

Adobe Digital Publishing Suite Features
Adobe identifies the following services for their new digital publishing suite.

Preview issues and test web browser interactivity.

Click once to bundle content. Deliver automatically to Distribution Service.

Apply specific brand to a customized Content Viewer for delivery to various mobile marketplaces (like Apple App Store, Google Apps Marketplace).

E-Commerce Service

From reader’s Content Viewers, support single-issue, multi-issue, or subscription-based in-application purchases.

Bundle digital offerings with print subscriptions.

Streamlined pricing dashboard helps set pricing for single issues, subscriptions, bundles, and special promotions digital delivery.

Readers can purchase content once, then read it on any platform running iOS, or Adobe AIR.

Analytics Service

View content performance and engagement metrics via pre-built dashboards.

Celtx offers a drag and drop storyboard app for Apple iPads. It’s pretty self explanatory by selecting a few of the buttons on the menu, and observing what they accomplish.

What if you need to quickly draw a movie scene, magazine or web ad, a play scene act, or a picture? This app allows the artist-to-be simple drawing commands at your fingertips (line, arrow, square, circle, text), plus over 570 figures to drag and drop in each picture.

Figures can be resized, moved, or deleted. There isn’t a copy function (to repeat trees, ducks, etc.), but it’s simple to select, drag and drop individual figurines multiple times. Once the picture is perfect, users can send as a PNG, JPG, or SVG file via email (requires email previously set up on iPad).

Need a pond? Just select the circle button from the Hand tool, click, and resize, or reshape. Change the outline color, or fill in with a different color. Paintbrush tools are not provided, so lines can’t be varied in width. Yet for $1.99, it’s a pretty interesting drawing app.

Sleek and Strong
Otters love the water, so it seemed natural to test our OtterBox iPad covers on the water. While sailing to the San Juan Islands in Washington, we tested the OtterBox Defender Series Case, and the Commuter Series Case.

Defender Series Case
When the boat’s healing over on a stiff breeze, you don’t want objects sliding and crashing to the floor. Otterbox’s Defender iPad case has an attractive hard polycarbonate shell that protects the iPad screen, and a tough, neoprene silicon grip cover on the back. Place the silicone grip cover on any surface, and the iPad won’t slide, even at a 20∘- 25∘ angle. The silicone grip shell fits like a glove and has well engineered portal covers, and the entire case keeps any sand trickling into unwanted openings. A small section slides off that allows the iPad to be docked for recharging. In addition, OtterBox also provides a thin plastic film that self adheres to the screen to further protect against scrapes, marks and dirty fingerprints. We don’t recommend laying an iPad on a log, or rock (sand does blow around in the wind), and the case is not waterproof, but the Defender case provides great protection carrying your iPad in a backpack, bag, or on the boat. The hard polycarbonate shell has a nifty, built-in stand that props up the iPad in two different positions. OtterBox even claims the Defender case can protect your iPad from an occasional bump, drop or scratch. I’ve bumped mine a few times, and yes, this OtterBox protected my iPad.
Cost: $89.95 US

Commuter Series Case
The Commuter iPad case has a similar neoprene, silicon grip cover with silicone plugs to protect portals, and a thin adhering film to protect the screen. An additional polycarbonate shell protects the back. The Commuter case is best suited for carrying your iPad in a brief case, or side pocket in a back pack/bag to take to work, the library, school, etc. Yes, we had it on the boat, and when we flipped the iPad covering the screen, the neoprene sides gripped the counter surface, even tacking upwind with 10 knots of wind. I’m not easy on electronics, but with this sturdy case, I wasn’t concerned about dropping the iPad overboard.
Cost: $64.95 US

If you want a light weight, sleek, yet sturdy iPad cover that delivers, consider the Otterbox iPad Cases. I’m very happy with these two cases, however, I will probably keep the Defender series on my iPad. Heck, even my Casio watch has roll bars, so I’m pretty happy I’ve placed a lightweight yet tough, sleek Otterbox case on my iPad.

Digital Noise Tamed
Digital noise is inherent in digital images, much like grain is inherent in film images. Sometimes, digital noise can enhance the mood of the image, and helps set the stage for the story behind the image. More often, however, noise distracts the viewer from the subject and the story. If the noise is just too obnoxious, then the noise becomes the story. Ouch. NIK Software’s Dfine 2.0 is a powerful, yet easy-to-use tool for taming digital noise.

New for Dfine 2.0:

User Interface

Improved noise reduction engine

Image and camera profiles

Improved batch processing

Improved selective tool

User Interface
Dfine 2.0 opens in a clean, professional interface, and automatically measures the image noise to create a profile. The image noise may be manually measured by selecting noise measurement areas, and then measuring this noise to create the profile. Alternatively, previously saved profiles may also be applied. Custom camera profiles are easy to create for each ISO used. These custom profiles are based on the camera used to create each profile, and thus account for manufacturing differences between sensors.

Preview and Loupe views are available to review the noise reduction effect on the image. Selecting the “Reduce” tab provides controls for the noise reduction process. Both contrast and color noise reduction may be controlled. Control points may also be placed on the image to fine tune the noise reduction. A brush tool is also available to selectively apply the noise reduction.

Images
To illustrate the noise reduction abilities of Dfine 2.0, an image was selected from photos taken in the evening at Seattle’s Pike Place Market (taken with a Nikon D200 (10 MP sensor) set to ISO 800). The selected image was processed in Photoshop CS4, using Dfine 2.0. 100 percent crops of the original and processed images are presented below.

100 percent crop of the original photo

Automatic Noise Reduction

Nikon D200 ISO 800 Camera Profile

Control Point Adjustment

The above images illustrate the noise reduction abilities of Dfine 2.0. The Automatic nose reduction works well. Using a camera & ISO profile provides enhanced noise reduction. And employment of control points provides precise noise reduction control.

Eye Catching Color
Color. The eye is naturally attracted to color, bright reds, vivid greens. Stories have been written about color. Songs have even been sung about color. Remember the Simon & Garfunkel song Kodachrome?

Color control is vital to making a subject pop. Nik Software provides a powerful color control solution with Viveza. Nik Software’s U Point® color control points provide Viveza with exceptional color control precision.

Color Control Workflow
Open an image in Photshop, select Nik Software and then Viveza from the Filters menu. Alternatively, access Viveza in Aperture (Images -> Edit With -> Viveza) or Lightroom (Photo -> Edit In -> Viveza). Viveza opens in its own user interface that includes preview, loupe, and filter control areas.

Simply select “Add a Control Point” from the filter control area. And then select the area of the photo to adjust. Adjust the sliders on the control point to achieve the desired effect.

Images
To illustrate the color control abilities of Viveza, an image was selected from photos taken with a Nikon D200 (10 MP sensor). The selected image was processed in Photoshop CS4 using Viveza. The original and processed images are presented below.

Powerful Workflow Tools
The Nik Software Complete Collection provides a powerful end-to end digital workflow solution. The Complete Collection includes:

•	Dfine 2.0	- Noise Reduction
•	Sharpener Pro 3.0 – Raw Pre-sharpening & Output Sharpening
•	Viveza – Color and Light Control
•	Color Efex Pro 3.0 – Image Enhancements
•	Siliver Efex Pro	- Black & White Conversion and Black & White Enhancements

Workflow
While these tools can be used in any order, for consistent results it is best to apply noise reduction before changing the image. Otherwise the noise may be altered and become difficult to remove. A clean image without noise is easier to edit and enhance. Next apply presharpening if desired. A sharp image is also easier to edit and enhance.

Adjusting color, light and adding enhancements can be done in any order. NIK Software recommends adjusting light an color prior to enhancing the image. When the image is ready for prime time apply output sharpening.

User Interface
These five tools all share an intuitive, user-friendly interface that enhances workflow productivity. The user interface was part of the new features for Dfine 2.0; Sharpener Pro 3.0 and Color Efex Pro 3.0. The user interface remains the same when accessing the plug-in from Photoshop, Lightroom or Aperture. The ability to use all five tools from these different applications promotes workflow flexibility.

Parallels Desktop To Be AutoDesk’s Preferred Mac Visualization Software
AutoDesk and Parallels have partnered together to provide AutoDesk software to Macs. AutoDesk is a leader in 2D and 3D design, engineering and entertainment software. Parallels offers leading virtualization and automation software.

“Autodesk will now support use of AutoCAD software, AutoCAD LT software, Autodesk Inventor Professional software, Autodesk 3ds Max software, Autodesk 3ds Max Design software and the Autodesk Revit software platform for building information modeling (BIM) on Mac OS X via Parallels Desktop. Autodesk added official support for these products on the Mac via Boot Camp earlier this year.”

Parallels Desktop for Mac allows over 2 million users to run Windows-based applications seamlessly on their Macs.

Lots of AutoDesk Choices
Mac users have quite a few choices from AutoDesk.

“With the launch of the Autodesk Alias family of software for Mac OS X earlier this year, Autodesk now offers five native Mac OS X applications for the entertainment, multimedia and design industries, including Autodesk SketchBook Pro, Autodesk Maya, Autodesk Mudbox and Autodesk Stitcher Unlimited software.
“Autodesk customers are increasingly working with both Mac and Windows, and have asked us to support Mac virtualization,” said Chris Bradshaw, Autodesk chief marketing officer. “Today we are pleased to welcome Parallels as a partner and Parallels Desktop as our preferred Mac virtualization software. ”

Parallels Optimizes Computing
Parallels works seamlessly with Macs (see my review at Parallels 4.0 Desktop for Macs). If you need access to Windows software, consider Parallels Desktop.

Now, Mac users can enjoy additional AutoDesk products with Parallels Desktop.
